Fabian Huerzeler said Albion suffered and defended together - and ultimately deserved three points at Newcastle.

The Seagulls weathered a rocky opening period before securing a 1-0 success through Danny Welbeck’s goal.

Albion boss Huerzeler said: “I have to be honest. In the first half we had a bit of luck. They had a big chance with Isak, they had a shot from Gordon.

“In the end, for me it is important that we defended together.

“That we suffered in the first half - and that is what we expected.

“That there would be a lot of intensity from Newcastle, that there would be a lot of man-marking and they did it quite good in the first half.

“But in the end we did it together and that is very important because then you deserve this clean sheet.

“In the second half, I think we showed a great reaction.

“In possession, we played with more courage, a better structure.

“Against the ball for me it was a really good performance.

“I think there were maybe one or two shots from Newcastle but it was a much better performance.

“In the end we deserved it.”
