Shannon Ruth has revealed what he said to his Albion under-21s after they won 10-0.

The head coach was keen to keep feet on the ground after the stunning Premier League 2 success over Crystal Palace.

A much-changed side then won 1-0 at AFC Varndeanians in the Sussex Transport Senior Cup.

Albion are at Burnley today (3pm) in a Premier League Cup fixture.

The double-figure haul against Palace earned a lot of publicity and goals were shown on the big screens at the Amex the following afternoon before the seniors faced Tottenham.

Ruth (pictured) told The Argus: “It probably put more pressure on (the Varndeanians game).

“If you win by the scoreline we won by, but also the publicity that the scoreline got, the key for us was to try to humble the players, and ensure that we took the processes that we did well out of that game to move forward and develop from, but we didn’t get carried away.

“Because Wednesday night could have been a hiccup for us after that.”

Albion scored eight second-half goals against Palace.

Ruth said: “I was delighted with our performance, it was the best we have played.

“Everything sort of felt like it came together.

“We were playing a good Palace side. They made one change from their previous fixture and they hadn’t lost all season.

“In the league, they had won two and drawn two and I think they had won their two EFL Trophy games, so we were playing a really good side and I think our start and our intensity dampened them.

“We scored an early goal through Cam Peupion and, in fairness to our players, we were so ruthless and so hungry to keep going for more that I think it led to Palace having a bad day while we continued to grow and get better and better. By the end it was a scoreline that people didn’t expect.”

Albion will make changes at Turf Moor and have international call-ups to factor into their plans.

Ruth said: “Wednesday to Saturday is quite a short turnaround and some players will be on international duty too.

“Ruairi McConville is away with Northern Ireland, we’ve got Harry Mills away with Cyprus, Ed Turns away with Wales.

“Harry Howell and Freddie Simmonds will go at the end of the month.

“Their international duty is a bit later this month so they will go and be part of the England under-17s qualifiers so we have a lot of players who are doing well and representing their countries.

“We will refresh and replenish the squad ready for Saturday, and try to get another positive result.”
