Bart Verbruggen has revealed how he got over his Euro 2024 heartbreak – and the big part played by Lewis Dunk.

The Albion goalkeeper is in international action tonight as Holland visit Hungary.

He has been his club’s No.1 since recovering from injury having helped the Dutch to the semi-finals in Germany this summer.

Holland were sunk by a last-gasp Ollie Watkins strike and Verbruggen still recalls how his club skipper went over to pick him up at full-time.

He said: “For sure, I really appreciated that.

“He came straight on to the pitch and he came to me.

“We didn’t really talk on the pitch a lot because he obviously wanted to celebrate with his team-mates.

“But I really appreciated that he came to me first and then later in the tunnel, inside, we spoke for a bit longer.

“It was very good to see him in that time.

“I think the qualities of Lewis are also beyond discussion. A brilliant guy, brilliant player and captain.”

Verbruggen took time to get over international disappointment – and be proud of his efforts.

He added: “When you get close to the main objective, if you then don’t reach it, it feels a bit harsh and it is painful.

“After a holiday, I got the time to feel a little bit proud and happy and privileged to be able to do that.”
