A prison officer has been using his passion for exercise and sport to help rehabilitate prisoners.
Taylor Wassell started his career as a prison officer seven years ago before moving into his current role at HMP Lewes two years ago. All prison officers have the opportunity to progress and become a physical education instructor.
The 31-year-old, who previously had a career as a firefighter, is urging others to join him.
He said: “Everyone knows that prisons have faced challenges and being a prison officer is a demanding job but it gave me the experience and chance to do my current role. Giving prisoners access to exercise is vital and I’m so proud to do what I do.
“I have two gym memberships outside of work as fitness has always been a passion of mine. I’m naturally a teacher and like to develop people and teach them how to use equipment and how to achieve their goals. One of our prisoners is an aspiring personal trainer so we offer support and guidance which is all part of our efforts to reduce reoffending.
“It’s not just about prisoners’ physical health but their mental health and self-esteem too. Physical exercise has a huge positive impact on the mind which helps the prison run more smoothly as a result.”
