Georginio Rutter has been backed to make a big Albion impact – after improving his fitness.

The record signing is expected to start against Tottenham on Sunday after opening his account for the Seagulls.

Rutter’s brave header as he leapt high at Chelsea offered a false dawn as his side went down 4-2.

But it was further confirmation for Fabian Huerzeler of the progress he has made since arriving from Leeds.

Rutter was previously denied by a fine save against Ipswich and was off target with other chances.

But his creative work has generally been good.

In his Friday morning press conference, head coach Huerzeler said: “I think he also showed before that goal good performances.

“He’s a guy who doesn't need goals to believe in himself and I think he has had a great impact, a great start to his new club.

“He's a very humble person, he tries to work hard.

“His shape when he arrived was not the best but now, through the training sessions, he has got fitter and fitter and we are very happy to have him in our squad.”

Joao Pedro (ankle) is still absent for Albion but Brajan Gruda, James Milner and Solly March are under consideration for the matchday 20 to face Spurs.

Joel Veltman will return from illness and looks likely to retake the right-back berth.

Simon Adingra will be assessed over the weekend with Jan Paul van Hecke (groin) definitely out.
