Fabian Huerzeler said he will examine what went wrong after a defensive horror show by his Albion team at Chelsea.

The Seagulls were cut apart at the back as they went down 4-2, with Cole Palmer scoring four goals.

They had gone ahead through Georginio Rutter during a strong start but their high defensive line will again come under the microscope after a first half in which both teams could have scored even more goals.

Albion also lived dangerously at the back in a goalless second half.

Head coach Huerzeler said: “We had a good start in the game. We controlled in the game, we had very good positioning.

“We scored and we deserved to score, then we gave the game away with easy little mistakes.

“And after these little mistakes we also lose a little of the structure.

“We weren’t confident enough in possession, we were not compact enough out of possession.

“I think it was one bad event after another and we can’t stop it.

“And of course they had an amazing player who punished every mistake.

“We should learn out of it.

“We can’t win when you do these easy mistakes, especially in the first half.

“We have to analyse it, we have to improve and if necessary we have to adapt something.”

Albion defenders Joel Veltman (illness) and Jan Paul van Hecke (injured) were both ruled out.

Huerzeler said: “You always need that connection on the pitch. We did a lot of changes today and there wasn’t the connection we needed to play like this.

“And the second thing is it is not about the high line, it is about getting pressure on the ball.

“In some situations we didn’t manage to get pressure on the ball and that is why they could play easily behind our back four.”
