Albion were held at home by Ipswich in a game they largely dominated.
Disappointment at the final whistle should not detract from some of the good work, both collectively and by individuals.
This is how they performed in the latter aspect.
Bart Verbruggen 6.5/10
A first Prem clean sheet of the season with no demanding work to do. Calm with the ball at his feet. He will take days like this.
Joel Veltman 7/10
Looked to get forward and join in build-up when he could while not really troubled at the back other than maybe in the first few seconds.
Jan Paul van Hecke 7/10
Rumbled forward in open play towards the end in a bid to create some way through. Was generally fine at the back but outpaced by Delap when he hit the post.
Lewis Dunk 6.5/10
Comfortable at the back and looked to help pass a way through. Was perhaps not the best option with that free-kick which hit the wall.
Jack Hinshelwood 6.5/10
Was exposed at the back in the first minute but not often after that – and when he was, he willingly took thee yellow card. Offers good options drifting into midfield.
Carlos Baleba 8/10
Strode around midfield in commanding fashion and has relished the responsibility handed him. Was the first to test Muric.
Yasin Ayari 7/10
The particular midfield option he provides is in getting forward, as far as the byline on occasion. Forced two dangerous free-kicks with his willingness to run at defenders.
Yakuba Minteh 6/10
The immediate feeling was that he was not at his best and failed to make the most of good situations. But, while that is true, there were enough good bits to help win the game, such as sublime work ahead of the Muric double-save and the Mitoma mis-control, for his afternoon to be remembered quite differently.
Georginio Rutter 7/10
Popped up in some good areas and tested both Muric and his defenders with efforts on goal. We did not see the twinkle toes this time but there is promise there.
Kaoru Mitoma 6/10
While Tuanzebe undeniably did a good job on him, there were enough occasions when he might, or should, have made the match-winning impact. Really should have scored when Muric denied him and his touch later let him down when a goal beckoned. But he was always a source of danger, can join in build-up play and Huerzeler saw enough to keep him on for 90 minutes.
Danny Welbeck 7/10
Went very close with a free-kick and did a good job linking play and getting involved in build-up. His final act was to chase back 50 yards and halt a potential Ipswich counter-attack.
SUBS - Julio Enciso 6/10
A good option to help push for the win but was part of an attacking effort which became somewhat haphazard and disorganised in the last push.
Simon Adingra 6/10
A few moments of promise as he was sent on down the right but not more than that.
Ferdi Kadioglu 6/10
The words “mixed fare” probably cover what we saw on his debut. But he certainly offers tempo and excitement and will benefit for this first taste of the Prem.
Evan Ferguson N/A
Good to see him back and his work to create a shooting chance was him at his best.
On a more general point, Ipswich got more from their in-game changes than Albion – but their subs were tasked with maintaining the course of the gam rather than redirecting it.
