Jan Paul van Hecke says Albion are tackling a brave new start under Fabian Huerzeler.

Especially when it comes to defending in a high line.

The centre-back is away with the Holland squad as they prepare for UEFA Nations League action.

He has impressed with the Seagulls while they adapt to new methods under head coach Huerzeler.

Van Hecke said Albion are defending “a bit higher” and added: “You need to be brave.

“Against Villarreal (in pre-season), we did it also in the first 20 minutes and they kept playing long balls over our heads.

“And I was like, ‘This is tough to defend’. But then against Everton we had like seven offsides.

“We kept our high line and then you saw it’s a big advantage for us.

“We can have the ball and then we decide what’s going to happen.

“So, I think it’s a good thing. Sometimes maybe it’s not always going to work.

“But I think most of the times it works and then it gives us a big advantage.

“Sometimes, of course, when they have the perfect timing and maybe someone of us steps a bit too early then it looks maybe a bit silly.

“But I think the advantage is better than if you not do it.”

Van Hecke says Huerzeler has built on good work done by his predecessor Roberto De Zerbi.

He added: "You could see it's not totally opposite from what we have been playing.

"But I think it’s more dynamic, it's really counter-pressing, lose the ball, all compact, close to the ball.

"And you need to run. You need to have the energy to play for him. I think it's good.

"We have the players to do that. It’s a good combination. I'm looking forward to the rest of the season."

Holland boss Ronald Koeman has been impressed by van Hecke’s effort with his club.

He told a press conference: ‘He has been at Brighton for more than a full season now, he makes a very mature impression.

“He makes good choices in possession. That is nice to see.”
