Albion picked up a point which had looked unlikely for a while but might have been more in the end.

It was a hard-working performance against a side fancied by many as title contenders but who went into their shell after Declan Rice’s game-changing red card.

Bart Verbruggen 8/10

Was in the action from early on. Secured the point with his big block from Havertz and gave a thoroughly solid and imposing display – but was left very exposed for the goal.

Joel Veltman 7/10

A central figure in the red-card drama before limping off. Is an awkward adversary for wingers and battled gamely against Trossard in the first half.

Jan Paul van Hecke 7/10

Some very good and important interventions, especially early on, and his passing radar was in good order as he kept feeding the left wing in the second half. But was left trailing by Havertz in the second half.

Lewis Dunk 7/10

We saw the best and worst of the skipper on the two goals. It looked like he was trying to over-complicate on the Arsenal opener but that pass for the goal was superb and was not the first he had played in the match.

Jack Hinshelwood 6/10

Given another daunting task and found Saka a handful – on occasion being reprieved by the England man’s poor end product. But settled after a torrid start and is doing a valuable job for the team in their time of need.

James Milner N/A

Was off to an unremarkable start before injury struck.

Carlos Baleba 7.5/10

A really strong presence in midfield and played with maturity. Can only get better, especially in choice of pass at times, but usually looks to be positive.

Yankuba Minteh 7/10

In his position, one moment of magic can make the difference. Got into central attacking areas at times and produced excellent movement and touch ahead of the equalising goal.

Joao Pedro 8.5/10

Early signs this season are he is doing what he always did plus a bit more. There was diligent following up and a clinical finish for the goal and he was often an elusive character for would-be tacklers. His defensive work is also earning credit – including an important chase back and tackle and some alert marking at the far post against a side renowned for set-piece goals.

Kaoru Mitoma 7/10

Always a threat and his duel with White became centre stage at 11 versus ten. He looked like he had the beating of defenders and the disappointment was that not more came of it. Flashed a volley across goal in the first half.

Danny Welbeck 6/10

A quiet game this time against his former club, spent mainly looking to close down Gunners building from the back.

SUBS – Yasin Ayari 7/10

Has been one of the stories of the summer with his nice touches and willingness to make attacking runs off the ball. He would have capped that with a goal had he opted for the near post with a quickly-taken shot

Georginio Rutter, Pervis Estupinan N/A

Were both sent on in wide areas for the final 20 minutes or so but the former wasted a headed chance, after some good movement at the far post, and the latter is not yet at his sharpest after injuries.

Simon Adingra, Julio Enciso N/A

The last throws of the dice and Enciso produced a superb cross which Rutter should have buried.
