Albion will wait on scans to see how significant Matt O'Riley's injury is after he limped off at the Amex last night, Fabian Huerzeler said.

O'Riley made it just six minutes into his Brighton debut after a horror tackle by Crawley's Jay Williams left him needing to be helped from the pitch by medics.

In his post-match press conference Huerzeler said that the new midfielder could not put any weight on his foot following the challenge and that the tackle set the tone for the rest of the game.

Huerzeler said: "I think after this foul it was like the players could tackle like they want because he didn’t get a yellow card.

"For me it is a clear red card. You can’t tackle like this but you can play hard and you can be ruthless.

"In the end I hope Matt is not so badly injured like it looks but we have to wait for a scan of his ankle.

"He said to me he could not put any weight on his ankle.

"I think he is a player who will help us and that’s why we hope that he is not so badly injured. We will have a look how it goes on."

Footage shared on social media appeared to show O'Riley leaving the Amex on crutches following Albion's 4-0 win against Crawley last night.

Crawley could have had Williams sent off for the challenge on O'Riley and did have substitute Jack Roles sent for an early bath after a late tackle on Yasin Ayari.

Reds' manager Scott Lindsey apologised for some of the physicality from his side in his post-match conference and admitted that Williams's tackle was likely sanctionable having seen replays of it.

O'Riley joined Albion from Celtic in a Scottish record £25 million deal on Monday afternoon and was immediately slotted into the starting line-up the day after.
