Daniel Hughes is back for potentially Sussex’s biggest test of the season – and on board for next year.

The Australian batsman and the returning Jaydev Unadkat will be the county’s overseas duo in the Championship game at Yorkshire, which starts tomorrow.

Hughes has also been secured on a deal for the 2025 campaign, when he will be available for all of the team’s County Championship and T20 Vitality Blast fixtures.

The aim will be for those Championship fixtures to be in division one and Sussex might know a bit more about their chances of that happening after the showdown in Scarborough over the next four days.

Hughes said: “I’ve loved my first season with Sussex.

"The boys, coaches, club and the entire Sussex community have welcomed me with open arms and it already feels like home.

"When Farby (Sussex head coach Paul Farbrace) asked me to sign on for another season I was quick to jump at the opportunity to come back next year.

"I’m excited to see what we can do for the rest of this season and to keep building into next year. Can’t wait to see what lies ahead.”

Sussex lead division two on 150 points going into the final five games but Middlesex (127) and Yorkshire (123) are pushing hard in the race for the two promotion spots.

They face a Yorkshire side for whom Johnny Bairstow is expected to play.
