Albion ended pre-season with a 4-0 win over Villarreal.

They were quite lively and inventive going forward and initially vulnerable at the back before sorting things out.

This is how they performed as individuals in a team display which promised a lot and sill gave room for improvement.

Jason Steele 7/10

Did enough on a low cross which might have given Villarreal an immediate equaliser at 1-0 and was allowed quite an easy save late on by Pepe’s weak finish to complete a clean sheet. Decent in all he had to do.

Joel Veltman 7/10

Made an early misjudgement ahead of the chance which saw Danjuma hit the post and was left exposed at times by Minteh not tracking back. But it was a typical Veltman display and he looks a sound starting option at right-back.

Jan Paul van Hecke 7/10

Villarreal got behind him in the first minute and after that he looked as strong as ever – and was the only outfield player to get the full 90 minutes.

Lewis Dunk 6/10

A 45-minute run-out with which to shake off the rust as he rejoins the squad following his Euros summer. Not at his most convincing but the half-game will have done him good.

Valentin Barco 7/10

Played a lovely chipped pass to send Mitoma in on goal and, after his part in the somewhat shaky start, looked lively – and a strong contender to start at Everton.

Mats Wieffer 8/10

A towering presence ahead of the central defenders. Closed down and kept things simple, a good example being at the origin of the second goal.

James Milner 7/10

His role will be to help others play and this was another professional midfield display, initially a bit ahead of Wieffer in build-up play.

Yankuba Minteh 8/10

He is so exciting on the wing – and a real menace to opponents whether he has the ball or is trying to win it back high up. There are question marks over his tracking back to help his full-back but he looks a game-changer.

Joao Pedro 7.5/10

Re-introduced himself to the action with a superb finish out of almost nothing and looked lively in his 45 minutes.

Kaoru Mitoma 7/10

His longest run-out of pre-season and he always looked a threat, although the end product might have been better at times. Can he continue his good record at Goodison Park?

Danny Welbeck 8/10

Capped his productive pre-season with a clinical one-on-one finish and a perfect penalty. He looks fit and sharp and he caught the eye for the way he brings others into play as they buzz around him.

SUBS – Jeremy Sarmiento 7/10

He looks like he could be a handy X-factor to have on the bench. Is not always careful with possession but can be a bit different and make things happen with good footwork and attacking ideas.

Adam Webster 7/10

Went on for Dunk at half-time and helped Albion enjoy a largely untroubled second 45.

Other subs N/A

Seven more players got chance to show what they could do with Albion by now firmly in control. Andrew Moran and Jack Hinshelwood played good roles in the move for the penalty, Yasin Ayari was decent on the ball and Simon Adingra looked hungry to score.
