Danny Welbeck was somewhat caught by surprise when he was given a compliment by the Japanese media contingent.

But he was happy to take it – and explain how he is enjoying his football with Albion.

Welbeck led the attack in the first half of both friendlies and was involved in some good link-up play with those buzzing around alongside him.

The closest he came to a goal was from a corner against Tokyo Verdy.

He saw a header saved at close range and then poked the rebound wide when the ball came back to him sharply.

Welbeck was told by a reporter, to nods all round, via an interpreter that his “passwork” at the front had improved during his time with Albion.

He did not initially understand but, when it became clear the reference was to link-up play, he said: “I’ve enjoyed my time here at Brighton.

“It has been good playing with the players and playing under the managers that I have.

“Long may it continue and keep improving.”
