A university student has bene called up to represent England’s Deaf Rugby Union team for the first time as she heads to South Africa with the Red Roses.
Samm Hart was a late call-up to the Red Roses 27-women squad, replacing an injured player, and will head to South Africa for the re-organised 2020 tour.
Samm, a University of Brighton student, had to fundraise thousands of pounds to be able to head on tour, receiving support from the university and Surrey RFU.
The scrum half said: “I was both shocked and grateful that I was picked by the manager and coaching staff for this tour despite joining the squad just shortly before.
“I can't describe in words how much of an honour it is to play for my country and wear the rose. I was extremely lucky to have received donations from the university, alumni and rugby community through my GoFundMe page.
“This tour will involve my debut for my country and add international caps to my playing history. It will be a great opportunity to develop my rugby community and skills to a higher level and fully integrate myself into my new team.”
Samm, who also plays for Richmond in the Women’s Rugby Championship, began her playing career in Havant and also works as a rugby development intern for the university.
The tour could see her make her debut for the Red Roses as well as taking part in charity work in South Africa.
England’s Deaf Rugby teams head to South Africa on August 3.
