Summer signing Amario Cozier-Duberry seized his chance in Tokyo with two goals for Albion.

But head coach Fabian Huerzeler picked out less glamourous attributes as he urged the wideman to keep working and improving.

The recent arrival from Arsenal rounded off a 5-1 success for the Seagulls against Japanese top-tier outfit Kashima Antlers in the Olympic Stadium.

Albion played some scintillating stuff going forward, bringing goals from new boy Yankuba Minteh and returning loanees Jeremy Sarmiento and Yasin Ayari.

Cozier-Duberry turned down a deal with the Gunners and the fact he opted to join the Seagulls on a four-year contract was seen as something of a coup.

Asked specifically about him after the game, Huerzeler said: “I am not the biggest fan of talking about individual players but of course today was a great experience from him.

“Of course today was a great performance from him.

“I don’t measure him from the fact he scored.

“For me, the most important was that we worked against the ball and how we counter-press when we lost the ball.

“I saw a lot of positive things.

“Not only from him but from the whole team and he is still very young.

“We are trying to improve him every day.

“Bu it is not only that we try to improve him every day.

“I think it is also important that the player wants to improve and that he has the attitude and the character that he is coming to every training, he is listening, he is trying to develop, he is trying to improve his knowledge of things.

“We are very happy with him so far and let’s see where it all ends with him.”
