James Coles said it was crucial Sussex bounced back from defeat as they push for a Vitality Blast knockout place.

Sharks were 22-run winners at home to Hampshire to strengthen their second place in the south group.

They have a three-point advantage over their closest pursuers with four rounds of fixtures to play.

Coles scored 46 from 33 balls in the hosts’ 200-7.

He then took 4-34 in four over as Hampshire were all out for 178.

It was a convincing response to the setback against Glamorgan in Sussex’s previous game.

Coles said: “It was critical we bounced back after Friday’s defeat against Glamorgan.

“We spoke after that match, although we don’t want to get too hung up over losses.

“The skipper (Tymal Mills) reminded us that good performances often come after defeats and we bounced back really well.

“He is very honest, and that’s the best way to be. He says it how it is.

“We got over the line today, so happy days.

“I did well for my part tonight but we’re in the fortunate position where everyone is in good touch.”

The highlight of the Sussex innings was a partnership of 83 in nine overs between Tom Clark (37 off 26) and Coles.

Tom Alsop added 35 off 17 against his old club as Sussex maintained a good run-rate after the early shock of losing Dan Hughes for no score.

Sussex took two wickets in the first two overs of the reply.

Ben McDermott was run out after hitting Ollie Robinson to extra-cover and calling for a single, then Tom Prest lobbed Coles to Clark at mid-on.
