Albion were last night still expected to secure a deal for Fabian Huerzeler as their new head coach.
But suggestions they had already reached an agreement with St Pauli for his services were premature as The Argus went to press.
The expectation remained an agreement would be secured, likely to be for a seven-figure sum and possibly with bonuses to reward on-field feats such as European qualification.
But fans were still awaiting confirmation of the appointment.
Huerzeler was believed to be bringing an assistant from another club.
St Pauli supporters are unhappy to see the exit of the head coach who took them to the second tier title in Germany last season.
Meanwhile, former Albion head coach Graham Potter was reported to be a target for Leicester City as they look to replace Enzo Maresca before returning to the Premier League.
