Jeremy Sarmiento has been called up to Ecuador’s Copa America squad after helping Ipswich return to the Premier League.

The Brighton forward spent the year on loan in the Championship with Ipswich and West Bromwich Albion and shone as he helped Kieran McKenna’s outfit secure a return to the top flight for the first time since 1999.

Now the 21-year-old’s efforts have been rewarded with a return to the Ecuador set-up.

He is joined by former Albion man Moises Caicedo but Pervis Estupinan misses out as he continues his recovery from an ankle injury.

Sarmiento made over 40 appearances in all competitions last season, netting six goals as Ipswich returned to the Premier League.

The young winger mainly featured off the bench in his time on loan but made vital contributions including a stoppage time winner against Southampton which put Ipswich back to the top of the Championship table.

Having represented England as a youth international, Sarmiento switched allegiances to his parents’ nationality in 2021, making his debut against Bolivia.

Sarmiento also represented Ecuador at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, where they missed out on knockout football in the final game of the group stages having lost to Senegal.

Moises Caicedo joins Sarmiento in the Ecuador squad after moving to Chelsea last summer.

Pervis Estupinan misses out on the Copa America having suffering an ankle injury which required surgery in Albion’s 1-1 draw with Burnley.

Roberto De Zerbi previously said that Estupinan is expected to miss the start of the Premier League season while he recovers.

Ecuador kick off their Copa America campaign later this month when they face Venezuela, Jamaica and Mexico in the group stages of the competition.

Sarmiento is the latest Albion player to head out on international duty as they represent their countries ahead of the Copa America, Euros and international friendlies.

Bart Verbruggen, Lewis Dunk, Jakub Moder and Deniz Undav are among Brighton’s representatives in Europe while Tom McGill also heads to the Copa America with Canada.

Tariq Lamptey has also been included in the Ghana squad while ten of Albion’s WSL players are also out on international duty.
