Julio Enciso was criticised for a “shocking” yellow card on the day he sparkled at St James’ Park.

The Paraguay international caused Newcastle plenty of problems in a 1-1 draw.

But that was overlooked by pundits on the BBC’s Match Of The Day, who instead focused their analysis on the home team’s failure to win and then highlighted bookings for Enciso and his compatriot Miguel Almiron.

Host Gary Lineker suggested Paraguay had two late entrants for their Olympic diving team.

Both players were cautioned for simulation during the second half.

Former Manchester City defender Micah Richards looked at Enciso going down and said: “This was absolutely shocking.

“He goes down two seconds after he clips the ball.

“That’s bad but this is worse (with refence to Almiron’s attempt to win a penalty).”

Alan Shearer added: “Shocking from both players.”

The former Toon striker added: “A draw was a fair result and Brighton got their point.”
