The county limited Surrey to 221-7 declared on the opening day of a two-day pre-season friendly with Surrey.
Sean Hunt claimed the first scalp at the 1st Central County ground this year when he tempted Rory Burns into a loose drive outside off stump, edging a catch to new skipper John Simpson behind the wicket.
Hunt took 2-36 in eight overs and there was a wicket apiece for Ari Karvelas, Henry Crocombe, Danny Lamb, Fynn Hudson-Prentice and James Coles.
Jamie Overton top scored for Surrey, who faced 49.2 overs, as he made 70 not out.
Tom Haines went for six in the reply but Sussex were 60-1 off 20 overs at close of play with Tom Clark having made 40 and Tom Alsop 12.
Play resumes at 11am on Tuesday and admission is free.
