Billy Gilmour is pushing himself to new heights thanks to regular Premier League action with Albion.
The Seagulls midfielder has been told he produced his best performance for Scotland in their friendly against Holland.
Scotland lost 4-0 in Amsterdam but were only a goal down and were having the better of the game when Gilmour was taken off on 68 minutes.
Comments by Steve Clarke backed up Gilmour’s pre-match view that he has progressed with Roberto De Zerbi.
The fact Gilmour wore the number made famous by Johan Cruyff was not lost on Clarke.
The Scotland boss said: “He was outstanding. I took him off because I wanted to freshen it up and give Lewis Ferguson time on the pitch.
“But before the subs had a chance to bed in, it was 2-0 and it suddenly became a long night.
“But it was Billy’s best performance for us.
“Wearing the No.14 shirt in the Johan Cruyff Arena, that was nice.
“It just shows the regular football he’s getting at Brighton in the Premier League is pushing him on.
“He’s getting better and better. But we’ve always said that about Billy.”
