Albion dug deep for three precious points after recent disappontments.
They played some attractive football for most of the first half of the 1-0 win over Nottingham Forest.
Then they rode out a testing period after the break before seeing the closing stages out in professional manner.
This is how they fared as individuals.
Bart Verbruggen 8/10
A first game in three weeks and the selection was justified. Two important saves, good presence and calm on the ball - and he was spared after one poor pass.
Joel Veltman 7/10
He won’t go flying down the touchline but was tidy in possession and steady at the back, bar one misjudgement which eventually cost him a booking.
Jan Paul van Hecke 7/10
Occasional glimpses of his passing but the clean sheet will be the big plus. Wood got away from him just the once of note.
Lewis Dunk 7/10
An ice-cool chest back to Verbruggen suggested all was well after his Roma tribulations. Will be delighted with the clean sheet.
Pervis Estupiñan 6/10
Got up and down the pitch gamely but the concession of a dangerous free-kick early on was the precursor to moments of concern and he was left trailing for the Origi chance.
Carlos Baleba 8/10
His most pleasing game yet in the Premier League. We have seen bits of his best but here there was a lot of it - and no significant lapses. He can be strong on the ball and, a bit like Bissouma or Caicedo, get a valuable foot in when not expected.
Pascal Gross 8/10
He won’t get the assist he deserves for the goal but that was not the first troublesome set-piece he delivered. Just as important were the way he started demanding the ball when Albion were looking ragged in the second half and then his 'old pro' part in killing off much of stoppage time.
Simon Adingra 7/10
Playing on the right this time, he was Albion’s most dangerous player in the first half but the threat waned after the break.
Jakub Moder 7/10
Will be spoken about in relation to the possible red card and it was a poor decision to dive in as he did. But he otherwise had a positive afternoon. This role was an inventive use of his attributes.
Ansu Fati 6.5/10
Not bad, not brilliant. Started wide left but always looking to drift infield. His best period of the game probably came straight after half-time.
Evan Ferguson 6/10
Another game without a clear scoring chance but the graft is there as was shown by some working back which delighted the crowd.
Subs - Danny Welbeck 6/10
Sent on at a time when Albion had lost the initiative.
Tariq Lamptey 7/10
Was a willing and lively outlet on the left and helped Albion reassert control in the later stages. Made a good contribution when it was needed.
Julio Enciso N/A
Almost entered the running for goal of the season when he let fly at the end of a superb move.
Igor N/A
Did a solid job as Albion reverted to a back three.
Adam Lallana N/A
A short but very valuable contribution as Albion negotiated the closing stages.
