Albion staff have been rallied for 72 big days after the defeat at AS Roma.

And they have been reminded the Europa League last-16 tie is not quite done yet.

The Seagulls went down 4-0 in the first leg at the Stadio Olimpico on Thursday.

Chief executive and deputy chairman Paul Barber sent a message to all staff the following morning, recognising they would feel disappointed and deflated.

But he told them Roberto De Zerbi, his staff and the playing squad were still capable of fighting hard to progress at the Amex this coming Thursday.

And he offered a reminder of important week which will follow.

Barber wrote: “We are ninth in the Premier League, just five points off sixth place, and we remain on course for what would be a third consecutive top ten finish – and another step towards achieving our vision.

“Playing for the first time in European club football, and in four elite competitions, has been tough. It’s been made harder by a longer injury list than we would like, and with it the loss of key players at critical times.

“Despite this, Roberto, his staff, and our players have done a magnificent job – and have given us so many memorable moments already this season (but there’s certainly room some more!).

“There is so much to be proud of, and so much more football to play. Disappointments and setbacks are part of elite sport, and so we must use moments like these to build strength and resilience.”

Barber thanked staff for their efforts, including those who went with the squad to Rome for the fourth away trip in the competition.

He added: “Please remember, the next 72 days will define our season, not one night in Rome!”

Albion fans were continuing to make their way home last night.

The effect of much-publicised rail strikes did not appear to be as great as first feared.
