One player in Albion’s Europa colours caught the eye at the Olimpico.

But, other than for a promising period at 1-0, it was generally a night when the real Brighton failed, or was not allowed, to stand up.

Jason Steele 6/10

Made a fine save early on from Lukaku’s bullet header but then caused nerves with a poor pass out. Seemed to be quite easily beaten at his near post for the second goal.

Jan Paul van Hecke 5/10

Albion’s defence were pulled apart at times and there were big gaps for the first and fourth goals. Did not really get a chance to show his developing skills as a play-maker from deep.

Lewis Dunk 4/10

Given problems by Lukaku. A horrible moment on the second goal just before half-time which brought back memories of Marseille and was part of a defence which left a big gap for the opener. A tough night against ruthless opponents.

Igor 4/10

Given the left-sided defensive role and, again, was caught by moments of quality, including Dybala’s movement on the first goal. There was little protection on that far post as Roma added their fourth.

Billy Gilmour 5/10

Back from his domestic ban but never really got into the game, although Albion had decent periods of possession.

Pascal Gross 6/10

Not as influential as he can be but seemed to be getting into the match more in that promising period during which Welbeck had his first headed chance.

Tariq Lamptey 7/10

Worked himself into some great positions down the right, often with his own ability to beat a man. Needed someone in the middle when things really opened up for him in the second half.

Facundo Buonanotte 5/10

Struggled to track Spinazzola. Linked up with some nice combinations with Adingra on occasion but it was too little really. His final act before being taken off was to slice a chance off target.

Julio Enciso 5/10

Looked like he wanted to take players on but without success. His moments will come but he is still getting there after a long lay-off and this was another big step in his education.

Simon Adingra 8/10

Albion’s shining light at the Olimpico. Saw a deflected effort hit the post and always looked like he could beat a defender and deliver a cross or commit an opponent and make room for others. He did one or the other on three occasions to set up Welbeck.

Danny Welbeck 6/10

This mark probably looks too high to some but it gives credit for getting into good positions and, when the crosses came in, climbing high. That said, he should have buried at least one of the headers and also looked disappointed to shoot off target.

SUBS - Ansu Fati 6/10

Some quite bright moments as Albion looked to get back into the game.

Joel Veltman, Pervis Estupinan, Evan Ferguson, Carlos Baleba N/A

Were sent on from 75 minutes onwards with the contest decided on the night and, almost certainly, over two legs.
