Albion are being linked with a late midfield swoop to round off their January transfer window.
They are reported to be keen on Leicester City midfielder Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall.
The player has been left out of the matchday squad to face Birmingham in the FA Cup as one of ten changes.
Negotiations were first reported by David Ornstein for the Athletic.
But the runaway Championship leaders value their midfielder highly.
Albion sold star midfielders Alexis Mac Allister and Moises Caicedo last summer.
Billy Gilmour has relished the subsequent extra responsibility but two summer signings are yet to make an impact.
Carlos Baleba has been handed a central role on occasion but is still seen more as one for the future by boss Roberto De Zerbi.
Meanwhile Mahmoud Dahoud has failed to make the desired impact as yet following his eye-catching move from Borussia Dortmund.
De Zerbi told The Argus yesterday that the door is still open for Dahoud to work his way back into the matchday squad.
He has not made the bench for the last two games.
