Sussex sides took points away from two must win games this weekend as both battle to keep their seasons on track.

While one side scored big as they push for the title another scraped to victory to see them lifted out of the relegation zone.

Haywards Heath 62-14 Crawley

A dominant Haywards Heath side came out on top in a high scoring affair as they continue to push for the title.

Ten tries including a brace for flanker Toby Vander helped Heath to a convincing 62-14 win over a Crawley side yet to win a game this season.

Fast flowing rugby and quick breakaway play helped Crawley come away with maximum points as they continue to push Pulborough for the title.

Despite initial pressure from Crawley a dominant scrum gave full back Chris Neill the chance to slice through the defence for the first try of the game.

A mix up in midfield saw Crawley level but scores from Vander and centre Christian Street quickly re-established the advantage.

Streeter added a second shortly after and Aidan Barker and Harry Edwards added a fifth and sixth shortly before half time.

Vander completed his brace to cap his dream debut shortly after the break and fly half Tom Wharton finished a simple score under the posts for a further score.

Penalties from Heath briefly let Crawley back into the game for their second score of the match but a chip and chase from Wharton helped him become the third double scorer of the day.

Ndiaye Marrero finished off the game with his own score to finish the 62-14 win for the visitors.

Haywards Heath continue their push for the title as they now sit three points behind leaders Pulborough in the Counties 2 League. They will look to continue their form when they head to Worthing Azurians next week.

Chichester 26 - 22 Newbury

Chichester held on to their first half lead to weather a Newbury fight back to complete a must win game for the side.

Tries from Ethan Carpenter and Huw Binfield and a double from winger Joel Andrews secured a bonus point before half time but Newbury rallied after the break to even the match.

Despite the continued pressure, Chichester clung to the lead for a vital win which lifts them out of the relegation zone.

Tighthead prop Carpenter collected a goal line drop out just two minutes into the match to scramble past the Newbury defence for the first score of the match.

After Newbury broke their duct with a penalty, speedster Andrews added his first by latching onto George Prentice’s grubber kick to score out wide.

A well organised Newbury defence held out a Chichester onslaught but eventually Huw Binfield broke the temporary deadlock by diving over to score.

With Newbury a man down following a yellow card Andrews quickly added his second score. Fullback Rhys Thompson’s offload released the younger winger to race down the end of the pitch to score on the stroke of half time.

Despite the one-way traffic of the first half Chichester’s fortune faltered early in the second period when a dangerous tackle saw them reduced to 14 men.

Newbury crossed the try line from the resulting penalty and, buoyed by the home support, added two further tries within 12 minutes.

Chichester were forced to dig deep for the final period after a second sin bin and injuries. Flanker Joe Hunter saved a certain try with a last-ditch tackle to give the side a valuable bonus point win.

Chichester now lift themselves out of the relegation zone with a valuable five points. They now host top of the table Jersey next weekend.
