Albion will look to continue a good record in the FA Cup third round as they visit Stoke City.

They have played at this stage in each of the last 14 seasons, including two campaigns when they were in League One, and progressed 12 times.

One of those was via a replay and they twice came through on penalties.

QUIZ: HOW WELL DO YOU RECALL ALBION'S THIRD-ROUND TIES?

It is four years since the Seagulls were beaten by Championship opposition in the third round.

Sheffield Wednesday were 1-0 winners at the Amex in Graham Potter’s first FA Cup tie in charge.

Adam Reach’s deflected free-kick provided the only goal on 65 minutes.

Potter made seven changes to his XI and said: “Credit to Sheffield Wednesday, they deserved to go through.

“We huffed and puffed but our second-half performance was disappointing.”

Potter also lived dangerously in his second crack at the third round as his side needed penalties to get past Newport County after a 1-1 draw behind closed doors at Rodney Parade.

Jason Steele made four saves before the visiting penalty-takers finally mustered enough successful finishes to sneak through 4-3 after seven rounds of spot-kicks.

Solly March had early scored with a superb 90th-minute curler which was cancelled out by an unfortunate Adam Webster own goal in added time after Steele missed a cross.

Webster converted the winning penalty and Albion subs wearing Covid face coverings ran on to celebrate.

Potter’s third attempt at this stage was heading for defeat at West Brom until the home team had Cedric Kipre sent off for two quick yellow cards when they were 1-0 up.

Jakub Moder’s second goal for the club and an extra-time Neal Maupay strike saw the Seagulls to a 2-1 win.

Albion would love something similar to last season’s third round, which offered a test not unlike that which faces them at Stoke.

Middlesbrough were on a good run under relatively new management in Michael Carrick but the Seagulls enjoyed a classy 5-1 win.

There are other third-round ties from the not-so-distant past which fans will recall.

Andrea Orlandi and Will Hoskins scored fine goals to see off Newcastle 2-0 in 2013.

And we got our first taste of VAR in 2018 as Glenn Murray’s late winner versus Crystal Palace, via his chest rather than arm, was allowed to stand.

The first match of Chris Hughton’s successful tenure was a 2-0 win at Brentford in this round nine years ago.

And there was a fright in 2012 when non-league Wrexham forced two 1-1 draws before losing in a shoot-out at the Racecourse.

The other third-round exit came when a strange line-up went down 1-0 at Hull City amid the promotion push of 2015-16.
