Albion boss Roberto De Zerbi is “really surprised” injured winger Kaoru Mitoma has been included in Japan’s final squad for the upcoming Asian Cup.
Mitoma sustained an ankle issue in Albion’s 1-1 Premier League draw at Crystal Palace on December 21 and is expected to be sidelined for up to six weeks.
The Asian Cup takes place between January 12 and February 10 in Qatar, with Japan scheduled to begin their campaign against Vietnam on the third day of the tournament.
De Zerbi remains without a host of first-team players ahead of the trip to West Ham.
He told today's press conference: “I’m really surprised because my medical staff told me Mitoma needs four, six weeks for his injury.
“For me, it’s difficult to think he can play in the Asian Cup.
“But I am a fan of Mitoma, of all my players, so if they can play for their national team I am very happy and very proud.”
There was again a Japanese media presence at the Amex when Albion played Tottenham, despite Mitoma's absence from the action.
He was present as a spectator at the Seagulls' 4-2 win.
Meanwhile Tariq Lamptey has NOT been included in the Ghana squad selected by Chris Hughton for AFCON.
