You can’t script a football match – and events to close 2023 at the Amex proved that.

Albion changed their game and ran up a four-goal lead against Tottenham before beating them 4-2.

These four long-time fans enjoyed their evening.

1. What were your thoughts on Albion’s performance versus Tottenham?

Alan Brownings: A great display, particularly in the first half where Spurs didn’t have a look in and we could have lead by several more.

Colin Beales: A very unexpected performance. Given our injuries I came to the game a bit nervous albeit gaining confidence upon seeing their weakened defensive line-up when the teams were announced. With this it was us who capitalised most on injuries giving their back-line a torrid time and should have arguably been further in the lead before changes in personnel allowed Spurs the glimmer of a comeback. Another great night at the Amex!

Tim Ayling: Amazing for 80 minutes, before panic set in. Given the injuries, especially out wide, it was astonishing really. It really was a fitting way to end an extraordinary year.

James Heasman: A thoroughly enjoyable 75 minutes, spoilt by a horrible last 15. Whilst Brighton deserved to win and the quality of football at times was sublime, it was alarming how nervous we looked following the substitutions of Milner and Welbeck. We are a young team and these steady heads are needed if we are to continue to improve.

2. Who stood out for you from the Albion team?

Alan Brownings: Gilmour, Hinshelwood and Joao Pedro all stood out, but I’m going to give it to the returning Estupinan for THAT goal!

Colin Beales: Two players stood out for me. João Pedro was brilliant, constantly getting in behind and of course tucking away the penalties, but I think James Milner’s performance was his best by some margin for the Albion.

Tim Ayling: One thing I didn't expect to write, but Milner was my man of the match playing out wide. He was everywhere, never stopped chasing and deserved the goal that the woodwork denied him. Joao Pedro and Gilmour were also excellent, but I think it's fair to say the whole team were. The teenagers, Hinsh and Buonanotte, deserve a mention too.

James Heasman: Gilmour played well, as did Pascal Gross and Joao Pedro. It was difficult to pick between Danny Welbeck and James Milner, but I think Milner shaded it.

3. Where does that Estupinan goal rank among the Amex greats?

Alan Brownings: It’s up there with Enciso’s against City last year, it’s one you’ll want to watch again and again and again.

Colin Beales: It certainly was a great strike that I'm sure even impressed team-mate Julio Enciso, but for me Jiri Skalak can still rest easy at the top spot for his QPR strike.

Tim Ayling: There's some pretty stiff competition in long-range goals with Enciso, Skalak, Izquierdo and many more. But it was a belter!

James Heasman: It was certainly a superb strike and great celebration. We have been fortunate to see some brilliant goals and this would certainly be in the top ten at least. Just wonderful.
