Roberto De Zerbi said he went against his medical staff’s advice to send on Danny Welbeck early.
The experienced striker headed the late goal which secured a 1-1 draw at Crystal Palace.
It was only his second outing in almost nine weeks.
Welbeck had been expected to play about a quarter of the game as he continues his return to full match fitness.
But he instead went on half-time, along with Facundo Buonanotte, and made a difference.
De Zerbi said: “Welbeck is one of the most important players in our squad.
“Evan Ferguson is a good player. Joao Pedro is another big potential player.
“He is already a great player but he is young.
“I think this is the first year he is playing in the 1st XI in the Premier League.
“Welbeck is a different player, he has a different level, but it’s a normal thing.
“We needed him.”
“I decided to play (him for) 45 minutes with my responsibility.”
