Kaoru Mitoma has been told he has a crucial role as Albion aim to go into Christmas on a high.

The Japan winger has not been at his best on a sustained basis in recent weeks after some injury concerns.

But he has shown signs of spark and created his side’s one clear chance in the 2-0 defeat at Arsenal.

He could be key again as the Seagulls go to Crystal Palace tomorrow.

Albion, unbeaten on their last five visits to Selhurst Park, would love a win to see them into a week without a fixture.

It would also go some way to atoning for what were seen as two points dropped at the same venue last season.

Asked about Mitoma’s form, De Zerbi told reporters at the Emirates: “He suffered, like Evan Ferguson, Adam Lallana, Simon Adingra.

“All my players suffered a lot. Kaoru didn’t play bad but it was a very tough game.

“After injuries I think he is not playing at his level yet but he is still a crucial player for us.

“The good news is Welbeck because we need him.”

Danny Welbeck ended an eight-week absence by going on as sub at Arsenal to make his 100th Albion appearance.

He will come into De Zerbi’s plans for tomorrow’s game.

The Seagulls boss will speak to media today ahead of the trip to Selhurst Park.

He is expected to give an update on Joel Veltman, who limped out of the Arsenal game with a knee injury.
