Albion fans were in festive spirits as Brighton struggled against a dominant Arsenal side.
The Seagulls did not register a shot on target until the second half through youngster Jack Hinshelwood.
Arsenal pressed De Zerbi’s side perfectly, not allowing them any space to play their usual intricate football.
The Gunners came close to scoring on a number of occasions in the first half but were denied from some heroic defending from Jan Paul van Hecke and captain Lewis Dunk.
Bart Verbruggen was on top form in goal but Arsenal’s dominance paid off through Gabriel Jesus early in the second half.
Brighton had moments in the second half, first a well-worked move and delightful cross which was met by Hinshelwood.
The substitute could not repeat his heroics against Brentford earlier this month, his first Premier League goal.
Pascal Gross should have scored just before the 90th minute when he met a Kaoru Mitoma cross but poked it wide from close range.
Mikel Arteta’s side then punished Albion on the counter with a goal through Kai Havertz.
Albion travel to Crystal Palace on Thursday night for an 8pm kick-off.
