Vincent Kompany has revealed Albion are a blueprint for Burnley’s plan for Premier League progress on a budget.
The Clarets boss and former Manchester City star spoke eloquently about how his side held on for a precious point at the Amex and how they are trying to build.
Burnley made the Prem in 2014 and again in 2016, both years when Albion lost in the play-offs.
They reached European competition while Albion were celebrating survival.
Now roles have been reversed as Kompany appeared to indicate when he was asked about his carefully recruited squad, including French youngster Wilson Odobert.
Speaking to reporters at the Amex, Kompany said: “Saying it in a place like Brighton makes so much sense. You are always looking to grow.
“When you are in the Premier League, how can you go from struggling to being mid-table to trying to have something more? Otherwise, you just struggle perpetually.
“We don’t have a Saudi Arabian sovereign wealth fund behind us.
“The only way to increase the size of the club is to have players that other teams want.
“When that revenue comes in, we can strengthen again.
“We are in a place that has done that very successfully.
“For us at this moment in time, having those players in the squad is not all about playing them all at the same time.
“It is about when is the right time for them to play?
“But around it you still have Sander Berge, you have Jay Rodriguez.
“The key thing is to find that balance but, in the toughest league in the world, it is also the toughest thing to do.”
Kompany felt his side caused Albion problems in the first half but said that changed in the second when the hosts had two wingers in full flow.
He said: “I thought the first half was outstanding. We had to be patient for the moments when we recovered the ball but I thought in those moments we were dangerous, whether it was in transition or just good phases of possession.
“We lost that in the second half.
“It became more difficult to recover the ball and it became more about our defending.
“They have got an outstanding team.
“It’s difficult to leave Mitoma and Adingra one-on-one.
“They have got so many players and it’s so difficult to leave yourself exposed against them.
“We struggled to get out in the second half but there was still a massive chance for Jay Rodriguez.
“We are in games and that was the biggest issue at the start of the season.
“This game was more similar to the Arsenal performance (a 3-1 defeat) but we have been staying in other games, where we were even the better team.
“To play against the level of opposition of today, that was the required performance.”
Kompany recognised super saves from James Trafford secured the point.
He said: “You don’t come to these places and get a result without moments like this.
“It’s now in the bank for him in terms of having done it, gone through this and he just needs to keep working on being the best he can be.
“His season has been no different to everyone else’s in the team.
“He has improved throughout the season.
“He has shown good signs but he has been more and more consistent.
“Ultimately at this level, consistency is the key word.
“In games like today, without somebody having an outstanding performance, you never get results.
“We are not at a level yet where we can compete every week with teams like Brighton.
“But there is tremendous belief in me that our club is going in the right direction.”
