Albion were on the wrong end of a harsh penalty decision at Stamford Bridge according to Match Of The Day pundits.

Leon Osman felt James Milner was unfortunate to be pulled up for his challenge on Mykhailo Mudryk, from which Enzo Fernandez scored what proved to be the winner.

Osman said: “I don’t think it’s a penalty.

“That ball rolled far enough from the feet of Mudryk to allow James Milner to step across.

“He is an experienced defender, he sees the opportunity to get his body across, use his arm and in that moment he has the right to step across in that way.

“The referee had a good enough view of it and I just can’t understand how there is enough for VAR to get involved in it.”

Jermaine Jenas said it was not a big enough doubt for the decision to be overturned.

But presenter Mark Chapman said the programme had been told it was a very good use of VAR.

Jenas added: “Craig Pawson is in a great position, he doesn’t give the penalty because of his natural instincts, then somebody says to him, ‘Go and look at it in slow motion and look at a couple of pictures of an entanglement with legs’. It’s a shocker.”

But Osman added: “I was disappointed with Brighton. They have difficulty against what Chelsea did.

“They have got to do an awful lot more to try and stretch a team which has only got ten men.”
