Bart Verbruggen has been told he can become one of Europe’s top goalkeepers – given time.
But it is unclear when he will next be in the firing line with Albion.
Jason Steele has been in goal for the Seagulls in all three games they have played since the international break and five of the last six.
That could continue at Everton on Saturday – but no one outside the camp can be quite sure.
Perhaps significantly, the relatively inexperienced Verbruggen has not played in any of the five away games in the Premier League or Europe.
Albion boss Roberto De Zerbi said: “Jason can play five a row and Bart seven in a row or ten in a row Jason and two Bart.
“We have to be honest. Bart can become one of the best keepers in Europe, I think, but Jason understands our idea of football.
“The best solution is to give the new players the right time to understand the system better.”
Mahmoud Dahoud and Carlos Baleba will hope for midfield involvement at Goodison after starting against Fulham.
De Zerbi said: “I think, in the first half, Dahoud and Baleba played very well.
“But it is still difficult for them to understand the details, when the situation can change.
“We changed a lot of players this season. Sometimes you forget.
“We brought young players plus Dahoud and (James) Milner.
“It’s tough for a new player to understand everything and I am happy for them.”
