Albion fans were left with plenty to talk about as their side tested Manchester City.
And one of the key questions was over who plays at left-back against Ajax.
A few contenders were mentioned by our four long-standing supporters.
One of them even recalled how striker Gary Hart showed some unexpected versatility a few years ago and converted to full-back.
Will someone in the current squad do something similar at a higher level?
1. What were your thoughts on Albion’s performance against Manchester City?
Tim Ayling: A tale of two halves. Man City were just too good for us in the first half, though Milner at right-back has been proven not to work. In the second half we were excellent and could easily have got something out of the game. But Man City away was never going to be easy for us.
Colin Beales: In the first half, City exploited their pace and movement on to an aged right-back who got little back-up from various team-mates and it took a change at half time before we were able to respond. Second half was a different story and with a bit more quality in front of goal we may have levelled the score. By the end of the game, it was City wasting time and clinging on.
James Heasman: Whilst appreciating we were playing the current league and Champions League winners, I felt we underperformed, particularly in the first half. If Milner is to play right-back, it is important Adingra, or whoever is on the right, tracks back and provides support. Although the second half was a lot better, we still weren't quite as slick as previous, and the apparent injury to Solly is just so sad and disappointing.
Alan Brownings: For 60 minutes we seemed to be like a rabbit stuck in the headlights of the multi-billion-pound juggernaut, only really coming to life in the last half an hour. Other teams will do far worse at City, but I can’t help thinking we gave them far too much respect.
2. Who stood out for you from the Albion team?
Tim Ayling: Dunk was excellent yet again, and Mitoma looked very dangerous. Baleba will have better games, but we need him to play in these matches for the experience.
Colin Beales: Joel Veltman changed the game when he came on. We were much more assured from this point and City had their main threat from Doku nullified.
James Heasman: I thought Igor Julio did very well and, other than the error for the second City goal, Baleba battled well. But, for me, Lewis Dunk was outstanding.
Alan Brownings: James Milner (in a negative sense) being completely outpaced time and time again, I’m surprised it wasn’t after 20 minutes we made the change, and Mitoma (more positive) who seemed to be at the heart of all the things we did well.
3. What does De Zerbi do now at left-back?
Tim Ayling: The obvious choice is Igor there, but it wouldn't shock me to see Gross have a game there, or even someone from the under-23s.
Colin Beales: I dare say he's running out of options here through our bad luck in the full-back positions. Igor has been spoken about in the past as being able to slot in so I'm expecting that for Ajax. Whatever we do over the next few games it's going to be less than ideal, a bit like last season when we had to bring Caicedo into the right-back position last season. Perhaps another full-back signing in the January window is on the shopping list?
James Heasman: Difficult question. Whilst Julio switching over may be obvious, he and Dunk are just establishing a good understanding and I'm not sure he has enough pace anyway. If Milner plays there, he is likely to get better support from Mitoma, so that could work. Other option is Imari Samuels, from the under-21s, who looks promising, but it is a big step up. I'd probably go with Milner.
Alan Brownings: It’s a big position in the way we line up. He needs to try a few players with genuine pace in training and see if anyone can slot in there and do a job. It’s a Gary Hart type moment! At least until the window opens in January.
