Madison Haley has been backed to score goals in the WSL.

But the Dallas-born striker is still building match fitness after a pre-season hindered by injury.

Haley looked lively in the second half of the 3-1 defeat by Tottenham at the Amex.

She could have more minutes at Chelsea tomorrow (2pm) with fellow forward Elisabeth Terland managing a minor injury.

Haley should arguably have scored against Spurs but she was a lively contributor at the sharp end after going on at the interval.

Albion boss Melissa Phillips said: “She is gaining in match fitness.

“She played against West Ham for half an hour, played just shy of 60 in our Conti Cup game and then had a half on Sunday.

“That is her first introduction back to match minutes having done rehab throughout pre-season.

“We are really pleased with the way she is progressing in training in terms of getting up to speed with our style of play and how we want to play through her.

“She is certainly an exciting player.

“I think she has the ability to score goals in this league.

“As with every new player, it’s about making sure they are prepared and confident.”

Terland has scored four goals in as many games this season and has earned high praise from Phillips.

Haley appears to offer a different tactical option.

Phillips said: “A lot of our attacking players are quite good in that central space.

“It is about finding relationships and working off them.

“I think she has some similar qualities as other players who have played in that No.9 position.

“She can stretch the game in a different way and the ball sticks to her when we play through her.

“There is a lot she can build around off that “But it is about making sure she feels prepared and confident in and out of possession.”
