Kaoru Mitoma has signed a new long-term contract with Albion.

The new agreement runs until June 2027.

The Japan international has been a constant threat on the left wing for the Seagulls over the past year.

His new deal comes a week short of the anniversary of his first start for the club, at home to Chelsea.

While transfer speculation surrounding Mitoma has been surprisingly sparse, there is little doubt he will have been eyed by clubs at home and abroad as one to watch.

Barcelona fans were recently asked in their local media whether he would be a good addition at Montjuic admit suggestions the Catalan giants were eyeing him  – and 74% who replied said he would.

But he remains a key part of Albion’s plans and has produced magical moments in the very recent past against Bournemouth and Marseille.

In the club statement announcing the new deal, head coach Roberto De Zerbi said: “It’s great news. Kaoru is our top player.”

De Zerbi has also offered an explanation for some fluctuations in Mitoma’s form in recent matches.

Technical director David Weir made it clear he sees the winger staying with the Seagulls for some time.

He said: “Ensuring that a player of Kaoru’s quality will remain with us for the long term is fantastic news.

“Kaoru adapted to the Premier League last season and has quickly become one of our most important players.

“His success is also a reflection of the work of the departments that have played a role in his recruitment, helped him gain important experience on loan and ultimately become a big part of Roberto’s first team group.

“I have no doubt that our supporters will be delighted with the news.”
