Paul Barber says the city of Brighton and Hove is on board with Albion’s European adventure.

The club’s deputy chairman and chief executive has sent a pre-match message to club staff thanking them for their collective efforts in the run-up to Europa League action.

He has also highlighted “a growing recognition from our local authorities of the economic and social value our club brings to our city”.

Barber has advised staff members to take in as much as they can as the club enjoy special times.

In his message, he wrote: “Our players and coaching staff, led by Roberto, deserve huge credit for their work in getting us to this point, as, of course, does Tony for his vision, commitment and financial support for the club over so many years.

“As a football club, we benefit from a top quality owner, a stable and experienced board of directors, top level players and coaches, a clear vision, strong values, solid planning, world class partners, and a loyal, resilient and fast-growing fanbase.

“We’re also blessed with very talented staff in all areas of our club. Some of you will have been on the journey for longer than others but you have all played a part in the progress the club has made, and you can take great pride in your contribution.”

He added: “Out and about in the city today, you will also see wonderful and colourful support from businesses and individuals in our wider community, and a growing recognition from our local authorities of the economic and social value our club brings to our city.”

Speaking to The Argus recently, Barber said the Amex will be a fitting stage for European football – as will Brighton and Hove.

That is the verdict from Paul Barber as he looks forward to the big occasion.

He said: “It will be a fantastic boost to the local economy.

“Hopefully we go beyond the group stages so we have even more games.

“On top of that you have got the coverage of the city because when European games are covered, normally the overseas broadcasters will also go out to get a flavour for what the city is like.

“You have got those pictures going across Europe.

“Hopefully we will see a boost to the economy, not just for the games themselves but also promotion of the city and awareness of the city which bring visitors back at other times.

“Hopefully this will be a fantastic boost for Brighton.”

The Amex’s list of international sporting events since opening in 2011 includes three games in the women’s Euros last summer.
