September 21, 2023, will go down in Albion history.

So it is and worth looking back at where they were on (or around) this day in previous years.

2019: Albion draw 0-0 at Newcastle as Steven Alzate makes an accomplished Premier League debut at wing-back. Graham Potter’s side have 71% of possession and 16 goal attempts but fail to score.

2013: Spanish Dave (David Lopez) scores an own goal on Spanish Day but Albion come back to beat Bolton 3-1 in the Championship through a Jay Spearing own goal, Inigo Calderon and Will Buckley, all in the space of five minutes.

The Argus:

2011: The first big night at the Amex as Albion host Liverpool in the League Cup and Vicente, as sub, makes his debut. The former Valencia star forces the penalty from which Ashley Barnes replies to strikes from Craig Bellamy and Dirk Kuyt in a spirited 2-1 defeat.

2010: Goals from Tommy Elphick and Ashley Barnes secure a 2-0 win in League One away to Plymouth, for whom Craig Noone catches the eye.

2009 (Sept 19): Albion go down 3-2 at home to Southend in League One, despite coming from behind twice through Nicky Forster. Francis Laurent scores a 90th-minute winner for the Shrimpers.

2008 (Sept 20): Albion go down 1-0 at home to a Walsall side who have their full-backs sent off in the 15th and 33rd minutes. Dwayne Mattis scores on 44 minutes and the tactically inept hosts are unable to break down the nine men.

2002: Albion are beaten 1-0 by Rotherham at Millmoor in what is now called the Championship. It is the eighth successive defeat on a losing run which will eventually extend to 12 games.

2001 (Sept 22): Bournemouth defender Eddie Howe scores for both teams as Albion beat the Cherries 2-1 at Withdean in the third tier. Paul Watson had struck first for the eventual divisional champions.

1997 (Sept 20): It’s a trip to the Riviera for Albion – as they lose 3-0 at Torquay in the fourth tier. They remain winless eight games into the first season of exile at Gillingham.

1996: Ian Baird and Jeff Minton score as Albion draw 2-2 at home to Torquay in the fourth tier during their final season at the Goldstone.

1994: A great night of two-leg cup football at the Goldstone as third-tier Albion beat Premiership side Leicester City. Kurt Nogan’s goal gives them a 1-0 lead to take to the second leg of their League Cup second-round tie at Filbert Street (where they were to win 2-0 to complete the job on aggregate).

1940: Albion’s attempt to play Southampton at the Goldstone during the Battle of Britain is abandoned after less than four minutes because of an air-raid warning. It’s goalless at the time.
