Albion had the better gameplan, the better organisation and the better options off the bench in the 3-1 win at Old Trafford.

Their cohesive teamwork – even in a much-changed team - helped them keep the ball for long periods and move United around.

They also had the better individuals. But this is how they fared within that collective structure.

JASON STEELE 7/10

Saved with his foot from Rashford and set the tone for Albion’s passing game. Was caught out from longish range by Hannibal for the one blemish.

JOEL VELTMAN 7/10

Got a precious touch to a Rashford effort which hit the woodwork and enjoyed a battle with England man while also participating thoughtfully in passing moves.

JAN PAUL VAN HECKE 7/10

Increasingly confident on the ball and is a robust defender. Rashford was keen to take him on and got the better of him enough times to deny the defender a higher mark but Van Hecke also made several key interventions.

LEWIS DUNK 9/10

What a way to follow up a career highlight after shining for England. Outstanding as a defender and clever as the distributor from the back. Is looking supremely confident.

TARIQ LAMPTEY 8.5/10

Given a tough task on the left and made it even tougher for himself with a rash early booking but got better as the match progressed and was hurtling forward to have a big part in the second half goals.

MAHMOUD DAHOUD 7/10

Seems able to find time on the ball and take an extra second to assess options.

PASCAL GROSS 8/10

Looked like he was thoroughly enjoying himself roaming midfield, prompting colleagues and finding angles and ranges of pass. Topped it off with a clever body feint before crashing home the crucial second goal.

SIMON ADINGRA 7/10

A first Prem start and delivered the ball for the opening goal. Worked hard up and down his less-favoured wing. Might have done better in front of the United goal just seconds before the hosts had their potential equaliser disallowed.

ADAM LALLANA 7/10

When is a brilliant assist not given as an assist? The dummy for Welbeck’s goal is a great example. That was the highlight of a first Prem start since January as he linked play and helped press.

KAORU MITOMA 7/10

Promised a bit more than he eventually delivered but was willing to release others in the move for the second goal and was always a potential threat.

DANNY WELBECK 8/10

Relished a goal at the Stretford End but his general play also stood out. There was a moment in the second half when he was galloping around in midfield winning the possession as opponents hesitated.

SUBS - ANSU FATI 7/10

Not a bad way to ease himself into the Premier League. Looked lively and quick and was denied by an Onana save when he probably should have scored.

JOAO PEDRO 8/10

Produced an exceptional finish with the instep and found great spaces. The end product and decision-making were better than we had seen previously and he was a big reason why 4-1 felt closer than 3-2 in the later stages.

BILLY GILMOUR N/A

Helped Albion re-assert themselves in midfield and produced super work to send Ansu in on goal.

JAMES MILNER N/A

A steady influence to send on to help avert a tense finale.

EVAN FERGUSON

A shuddering tackle to win a throw suggested his knee is okay.
