Danish midfielder Jens Jonsson earned rave reviews as AEK Athens won with ten men.
AEK were the only one of Albion’s three Europa League opponents to take full points in the first round of games after the draw.
Jonsson scored and dominated in midfield as his side won 3-2 at Volos.
AEK forward Petros Mantalos was red-carded after 24 minutes but his side won with a stoppage-time penalty converted by Nordin Amrabat.
Jonsson, who scored with a soaring far-post header from a free-kick, said: “AEK showed character with one less player and that we do not settle for a draw."
Amrabat is the elder brother of Manchester United’s recent signing Sofyan.
Former Albion forward Chuba Akpom made his debut for Ajax as they drew 0-0 at Fortuna Sittard.
Akpom, signed recently from Middlesbrough, went on for the last half-hour.
Marseille drew 1-1 at Nantes on Friday night, which was disappointing after an explosive start.
Former Watford forward Ismaila Sarr scored and forced a red card inside the first ten minutes.
But OM conceded an equaliser to a throw-in and were uninspired as they sought to restore their lead.
Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang was up front and was quiet until he hooked a good chance off target in stoppage time.
