Albion were caught in the West Ham gameplan as they lost at the Amex.

Amid all the talk of tactics, set-ups and players who WEREN’T there, this is how the Seagulls fared as individuals.

BART VERBRUGGEN 6/10

Was given an easy save early on and made a good stop in a one-on-one right at the end. No other saves to make on his debut but looked assertive on set-pieces.

JAMES MILNER 5/10

Was reprieved by Paqueta when he made a mess of a very early clearance. Got a long way forward at times and joined in play but West Ham were able to exploit Albion on the right of defence as they countered at pace.

LEWIS DUNK 6/10

Unlucky with a header which Ings cleared in front of goal but Albion – partly because of their shape and attacking commitment - rarely looked solid when attacked.

ADAM WEBSTER 4/10

Such a good player for Albion during their Prem progress but he had a horrible evening. Had already been given a couple of awkward moments by the time West Ham went ahead. The intentions to play from the back were good, execution less so on the first goal, and was left trailing for the third and Antonio’s later miss.

PERVIS ESTUPINAN 6/10

A threat again going forward, even if the final delivery was not always quite right, but was outpaced by Bowen for the second goal. He also saved a possible goal with his recovery run in the first half.

BILLY GILMOUR 6/10

Had a couple of first-half shots, one going wide and the other blocked by Ward-Prowse, but generally kept his passing very simple. Was diligent and tidy without being influential.

PASCAL GROSS 7/10

A sweetly struck and historic goal, making him Albion’s top Prem scorer, was overshadowed by the result. He kept trying to get his side playing and had twice tested Areola before scoring.

SOLLY MARCH 6/10

Saw a free-kick deflect behind and helped Albion have the best of the first half without finding a moment of real spark.

DANNY WELBECK 6/10

Had to change his game as part of the line-up change. More noticeable in the early stages of the second half than he had been in the first as he started to get on the ball in his No.10 role and shoot or find others.

KAORU MITOMA 6.5/10

Looked like he might be the man to make something happen on occasions and set up some good situations, including Ferguson’s header which was saved.

EVAN FERGUSON 6/10

Worked to join in build-up play and will wonder how he didn’t score as Areola denied him on three occasions. Maybe the header should have been buried.

SUBS

Joao Pedro – Got on the ball and looked like he might make a difference but somehow it never quite happened. 6/10 Adam Lallana – Helped knit play together after going into midfield. 6/10 Joel Veltman – Unlucky not to score with a fierce volley.

Simon Adingra – Buzzed about against the massed defence.
