Albion are interested in signing a player following Yves Bissouma’s footsteps.
Lille teen Carlos Baleba is among the midfielders being eyed by the Seagulls.
Albion have sold Moises Caicedo to Chelsea for a fee which will reach £115 million.
Baleba is among those on whom they are keeping close tabs.
The 19-year-old from Cameroon played Ligue 1 football last season with Lille – Bissouma’s old club - and kicked off the current campaign by starting at Nice on Friday.
An experienced talent-spotter in northern France told The Argus: “He’s a top talent. A lot better than Bissouma at the same age.”
Albion’s position remains they are happy with the squad while always with an eye to strengthening.
But Roberto De Zerbi has made his desire for a midfielder clear.
No further departures of high-profile players are expected this month.
