Albion scored two own goals last time they played against Luton Town in the top flight.
They lost 4-2 at the Goldstone in a relegation six-pointer a little more than 40 years ago.
Gary Stevens and Jimmy Case both headed into their own net to supplement a double strike from Luton’s talented midfielder Ricky Hill.
Andy Ritchie and Tony Grealish scored at the right end for the Seagulls, who were always chasing the game.
But the match was less entertaining than the scoreline would suggest.
Unusually, the sponsors gave their man of the match award to a member of the visiting team.
It was something of a special case as the player in question was legendary former Seagulls skipper Brian Horton, who led out the Hatters and set up their first two goals.
Horton’s prize was a cheque for £50.
While Albion were struggling in the league, they were in the early stages of an FA Cup run which took them all the way to a replayed final.
After the Luton debacle, their next home match was the fourth-round tie versus Manchester City.
Going into that one, Albion boss Jimmy Melia said: “I will be quite happy if we score four goals, but I hope they are all in the Manchester City net.”
Albion duly beat City 4-0.
The last league games of any kind between the sides came in League One in the 2007-08 season.
Albion won 3-1 at Withdean with goals from Bas Savage and Nicky Forster (two).
Sam Parkin gave Luton the lead early in the second half at Kenilworth Road towards the end of the season.
But Ian Westlake and Glenn Murray secured a 2-1 Albion win within ten minutes.
The Albion side included French midfielder Therry Racon, on loan from Charlton, and forward Johnny Dixon.
