Albion new boy Joao Pedro made a positive impression as pre-season got under way.
The signing from Watford scored one goal and made another in the Summer Series opener versus Chelsea in Philadelphia.
Albion led early on through Danny Welbeck but eventually went down 4-3.
Welbeck finished off a Kaoru Mitoma knockdown following a set-piece routine.
The Seagulls, who were quicky pegged back by Christopher Nkunku, were the better side until Jan Paul van Hecke was sent off on 53 minutes for what appeared to be a second yellow card.
Chelsea then opened a 4-1 advantage through Mykhaylo Mudryk, Conor Gallagher and Nicolas Jackson.
However, the ten men were not finished.
Pedro’s trickery forced a penalty, which he converted himself having been fouled by Levi Collwill.
The Brazilian then teed up Deniz Undav for a good finish.
Albion used 21 players, including several youngsters.
Albion: Steele (Verbruggen 46); Hinshelwood (Samuels 66), Van Hecke, Webster (Alzate 53); Gross (Weir 66); Gilmour (Ayari 53), Dahoud (Veltman 46); March (Adingra 46), Lallana (Undav 46), Mitoma (Enciso 53); Welbeck (Pedro 53)
