A leading VAR analyst has called for change after Albion were denied by a contentious offside call.

Pervis Estupinan saw his first-half strike at Crystal Palace ruled out for what appeared a very tight decision by VAR John Brooks.

An image later emerged which appeared to show Estupinan’s position when Pascal Gross passed to him had been judged against the wrong defender.

Chief refereeing officer Howard Webb has contacted Albion to acknowledge and explain what the PGMOL are calling a "significant" error in the VAR process.

They have also contacted Arsenal, who felt a goal conceded to Brentford shoud have been ruled out for offside.

Dale Johnson, who writes ESPN's weekly VAR review, said he could “confirm” an error had been made at Selhurst Park.

He tweeted: “This, and Arsenal v Brentford, one of many reasons why automated offside position tech is needed ASAP.”

Albion are hugely disappointed by the error but have accepted a PGMOL apology and they are not expected to make further comment.

A club spokesman said: “As was confirmed to the club by PGMOL last night, a serious error was made in disallowing Pervis Estupinan’s goal at Crystal Palace yesterday.

“The lines drawn in the VAR room to determine whether Pervis was in an offside position were drawn incorrectly, and the goal should have stood. While hugely disappointed by the error, the club has accepted PGMOL’s apology and will not be making any further comment.”

Estupinan’s luck, meanwhile, remains out.

He would have become the first Albion player to score a goal at a World Cup but for what looked an incorrect VAR offside call when he netted for Ecuador versus Holland.
