Kaoru Mitoma says it feels like he has been playing for his life with Albion – as he goes into World Cup action.
The Japan international is in contention to face Germany on what could be a busy day for the Seagulls’ men in Qatar.
Robert Sanchez and Spain take on Costa Rica and Leandro Trossard and Belgium play Canada.
All three are expected to start on the bench and Mitoma could be a useful impact sub if needed.
He has made big strides already this season with Albion and scored in each of his last two appearances.
Mitoma said: “I think I’ve improved a lot, as the intensity of training and the quality of my team-mates are pretty high.
“Obviously, by playing in matches against these top class teams, I can feel myself developing.
“The intensity of training, fighting for every ball, the tense atmosphere in each match and the fierce rivalries.
“It feels like we are all playing for our lives - both players and the fans, which is something different from what I was used to before I came to Europe.”
Japan have reached the last 16 three times since 2002.
Mitoma said: “If we can reach the last eight or better, I think that would be a success.”
Japan kick off at 1pm, Spain at 4pm and Belgium 7pm.
Alexis Mac Allister remained on the bench as Argentina suffered a shock 2-1 defeat by Saudi Arabia yesterday.
Tariq Lamptey could start for Ghana against Portugal tomorrow.
