Into the month of November, and Shaun Saunders’ Whitehawk still hold an unbeaten record in the league and, as of Tuesday night, the Velocity Cup, writes Isaac Gleave.
Unbeaten in their opening nine league matches - five wins and four draws - after crushing Faversham Town 6-1 on Saturday afternoon, the Hawks travelled to cup holders Horsham on Tuesday afternoon looking to cause an upset.
Buoyed by such vicious momentum, it was so vividly spotlighted beneath the bright bulbs of Hop Oast as an 82nd minute Will Miles header earned his Whitehawk side a 3-2 victory, sparking pandemonium behind the goal.
Jack Mazzone had handed his Horsham side an early lead, capitalising on a Stefan Wright error to record his eight of the campaign. But this only spurred the Hawks on as the visitors banged on the door with increasing power.
Joe Shelley notched his eighth of the campaign and seventh from the penalty spot, and Wright made amends for his early error by tapping home following some sumptuous work from Joel Daly along the byline.
Former Hawk Alex Malins was dismissed for a second bookable offence soon after the restart, but this only seemed to galvanise his Isthmian Premier League side as they soon found the equaliser through Mazzone was once more.
But the shock was sealed moments later as Miles climbed high to spark jubilant scenes, as a huge league clash at Ashford United on Saturday now comes into view.
