Albion are keeping Ian Westlake on loan for the rest of the season.

They have struck a deal with promotion rivals Leeds to hang on to the former Ipswich midfielder for the last six matches and the play-offs, unless they end up facing the Yorkshiremen.

Manager Dean Wilkins admitted: "I am slightly surprised but Leeds have got their own agenda and that is what they are sticking to. We are just pleased they have agreed to it and pleased to have Westy here.

"He has brought balance to the side by being left-footed but he has also brought his enthusiasm and personality as well."

Wilkins has been sweating on Westlake's availability since the loan transfer window closed eight days ago.

He said "It was a bit of a concern, because if we hadn't secured him then we can't go out and get anyone else, so it's good to have him here."

Westlake's month on loan was due to expire with tomorrow's home game against rock-bottom Port Vale, when he returns from a two-match absence.

He missed the 0-0 draw at Nottingham Forest with a calf injury and Leeds would not allow him to play against them in last Saturday's goalless stalemate at Elland Road.

The Yorkshiremen have the right to recall him at any time after tomorrow's match but Westlake is relieved that his immediate future has been resolved.

"They pay my wages and I am contracted to Leeds but now I am a Brighton player and everything is about Brighton for me and that is what I am concentrating on," he said.

"The team have done really well in the month I've been here, so it's nice to be a part of the next one.

"It has been really enjoyable. I want to play, so I am a lot happier at the moment and the boys have made me feel really welcome.

"It's been frustrating missing the last two games but that's life. We'll move on now and hopefully win tomorrow."
